Early rise for an 0800 departure. Didn't sleep well last night pondering why Kansas City is not located in Kansas. Doesn't seem quite right that it is in Missouri and to make it more shameful it's the largest city in Missouri!!! It was originally named Kansas after the river but that became confusing with the establishment of Kansas Territory in 1854!! To alleviate that confusion it was renamed Kansas City. Oh, I get it now!!!! These mid-Westerners sure know how to make things clearer. K. C. is located at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers and for me it's greatest claim to fame is a water park possessing the tallest water slide in the world, the "Verruckt" at Schlitterbahn Waterpark!!! It is an amazing 168 foot tall drop; that probably beats the tallest elevation in the entire state of Kansas, of which K.C. is not located!! Confusing! Next time I'm passing this way I'm bringing my Kevlar jock and checking it out!!!
It would be a straight shot across Missouri on Route 36. The roadway is named "The Way of American Genius" because of its connection to some of the world's most well known innovators and innovations!! This should be entertaining!!! Truly, this is the "Show Me" State!!
It passes through hometowns and museums of Mark Twain, Walt Disney, General John J. Pershing and J. C. Penney and leads to the Pony Express Museum in St. Joseph. Most impactful on the course of humankind occurred in Chillicothe, MO where the first loaves of "sliced bread" were sold!! Yes, I said "sliced bread". Who thinks up these things?!!
The route was 4 lane and straight and we arrived at Mark Twain's Cave RV Park with plan to stay two nights so I could tour all the great sites associated with "America's Greatest Author" and my personal "hero", Samuel Clemens.
A great M. T. quote to ponder : "Heaven goes by favor; if it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in."
